After almost 20 years of dedicated efforts to elevate Texas as a prime hub for top research universities, the state has notably increased the number of institutions achieving Tier 1 status.
On Thursday, the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education announced that 16 Texas schools have attained R1 research university status, including Southern Methodist University and UT Southwestern Medical Center.
